Release date: Tue, 08 Jul 2008 23:59:00 GMT

The disk that contains your computer’s operating system is called the startup disk or boot disk. In addition to the operating system, the startup disk also stores your applications (such as Final Cut Pro), your application preferences, system settings, and documents. Because the files on the startup disk are your most critical data, maintaining the startup disk is vital.
Because digital media (especially high data rate video) makes your disks work harder, you should use dedicated disks for capturing and playing back your digital video and other media files. Consider your media disks as storage units that work long, hard hours, while your startup disk keeps your system properly organized. If a disk is going to malfunction, it’s better if your critical data is separate from your replaceable media files.
Depending on what kind of computer you are using, you may be able to use internal and external hard disks to store your media files. Each has benefits and drawbacks.

Release date: Sat, 03 May 2008 00:37:00 GMT

Standard tapeless workflows involve reformatting and reusing the memory cards used for shooting. Before reformatting the cards, it's prudent to make a backup copy of your media on hard disk, whether for safety or for recapture later on. This article discusses guidelines for reliable backup.
Note: It's important to preserve the original names and folder structure found on the memory card so that the media will be recognized and handled correctly when retrieving the archive. If you try to access media from a memory card that you saved to a hard disk then changed its folder name or structure, Final Cut Pro warns you with a message like this:

 	Warning
"Folder Name" contains unsupported media or has an
invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder
whose directory structure matches supported media.
Other transfer software may also be unable to open media files copied from memory cards if the folder names or folder structure has changed.
This article discusses archiving memory cards like the following:

Panasonic P2 cards containing MXF-wrapped media
Sony SxS cards containing XDCAM EX media
    SDHC cards containing AVCHD media

Normally, in cases where a subclip's frame rate and a sequence's frame rate do not match, adding the subclip to the sequence may cause the subclip limits to be adjusted and new clip In and Out points to be set. This is normal, and these adjustments ensure that the edit you perform has the starting and ending frames you would expect.
An exception to the behavior described above can occur if you use multiclips which are comprised of subclips which have a frame rate that is different from the frame rate of the sequence you're editing.
