Release date: Thu, 28 Feb 2008 19:27:00 GMT

Email is one of the quickest, most convenient, and inexpensive ways of staying in touch with friends and family. Mac OS X makes it easy to send and receive email with a built-in email application called Mail. All you need is access to the Internet and an email account which is usually provided with your Internet account or you can even sign up for a MobileMe trial account and get an @me.com email.
The first time you open Mail (by clicking the postage stamp icon in the Dock), your Mac automatically sets up an email account for you using the information in the MobileMe pane of System Preferences. If you don't have a MobileMe account (or haven't entered that information yet), Mail Setup Assistant opens to guide you through the process of setting up a new account—just enter the information provided by your Internet provider and you can create additional email accounts at any time.
Once you've got your account set up, you're ready to send and receive email—we show you how to do both below. And if you're having difficulty sending or receiving email, we've got 10 things for you to try that'll help get you back in touch with the world again.

Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to automatically check for the latest Apple software.

Release date: Tue, 17 Jun 2008 19:12:00 GMT

"Phishing" (also known as "carding" or "spoofing") refers to email that attempts to fraudulently acquire personal information from you, such as your account password or credit card information. On the surface, the email may appear to be from a legitimate company or individual, but it's not.
As a general rule, never send credit card information, account passwords, or extensive personal information in an email unless you verify that the recipient is who they claim to be. Many companies have policies that state they will never solicit such information from customers by email.
If you do receive email that you're not sure is valid, here are some tips that can help you determine its legitimacy.

Release date: Thu, 04 Sep 2008 00:48:00 GMT

Learn how to configure your iPhone or iPod touch, or Mail in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, so that MobileMe account messages in the Trash mailbox (folder) are retained for one month (30 days).

The MobileMe mail service is designed to keep deleted messages in the Trash folder for 30 days. After 30 days, messages in the Trash will be permanently erased. If you use only MobileMe Webmail to check your email, the default 30 day Trash folder behavior will never change. However, if you use any other IMAP clients like Mac OS X Mail or Mail on your iPhone, the preferences on those clients may delete messages from the Trash earlier than MobileMe otherwise would. This means that if you use Mail on the iPhone or iPod touch to check your MobileMe email account, the preferences on the device IMAP client will determine whether or not a message in the Trash mailbox should be deleted. Since the default behavior on the iPhone and iPod touch Mail application is to permanently delete messages in the Trash folder after seven days, you may notice that messages you put in the Trash two weeks ago have been permanently deleted since the last time you checked your MobileMe Mail from the iPhone or iPod Touch. The same behavior applies to Mac OS X Mail. This article will show you how to set the same deletion rules for the MobileMe Mailbox Trash folder on your iPhone, iPod touch, and your Mac running Leopard.
Note: If you don't want to risk permanently losing an important message, do not delete it or move it to the Trash mailbox (folder).
