Using MSCONFIG to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows XP is discussed in this article.

These conflicts can prevent applications such as iTunes and QuickTime Player from working correctly, opening, or even installing. You might be able to resolve these conflicts by disabling some items using the System Configuration Utility (MSCONFIG) in Windows.
Important: Disabling third-party System Services and Startup Items can prevent some software or OEM hardware on your computer from working correctly. For example, this can affect the CD/DVD control buttons on portable computers or prevent wireless keyboards and mice from functioning. If you are already using the Selective Startup option in Windows (see step 4 below), you will need to keep track of which items you disable and re-enable so after performing this troubleshooting, you can get your computer back to the way it was. Selecting Normal Startup may enable items that you were not using, and could cause issues.

Release date: Thu, 26 Jun 2008 18:21:00 GMT

Some audio applications may change your computer's audio settings to a sample rate that is too high for other applications to use. In this situation, system alert sounds still work, and does iTunes, but other applications may have no sound (audio output). This document applies to Mac OS X 10.3 or later and applications that use QuickTime 6 or later for audio, such as Safari and Quicktime Player.
This can happen on Macs that support high sample rates (higher than 48000 Hz):

    iMac G5
    Mac mini (all models)
Power Mac G5 models that support sample rates higher than 48000 Hz
PowerBook G4 support sample rates higher than 48000 Hz
    MacBook
    MacBook Pro
    iMac (Early 2006) and later
    Mac Pro

For example, if you play an Internet movie in Safari, it will make no sound; if you open a QuickTime movie on your computer, QuickTime Player reports the following error (and the movie will have no audio):

"You may experience problems playing a sound track in (Movie Name).mov because a software component needed by the movie could not be opened."

QuickTime 7: Preparing movies for Internet delivery

Release date: Wed, 16 Jul 2008 17:22:00 GMT

With QuickTime Pro, you can create movies that can be delivered over the Internet. You can deliver a movie as an HTTP download or as a real-time stream.

HTTP download—This type of delivery allows website visitors to download the movie to their hard disk. Fast Start is a QuickTime feature that enables users to watch the movie as it's being downloaded (long before the whole movie has been downloaded) from a standard web server. Fast Start works well for short-form movies where file size is limited. It ensures high-quality playback regardless of the users' Internet connection speeds, though those with slower connections will wait longer before media starts to play.

Real-time stream—This type of delivery is provided by QuickTime Streaming Server, and delivers media in real time over the Internet, from modem rates to broadband. The file is not downloaded to a viewer's hard disk. Instead, the media is played, but not stored, by the client software as it's delivered. Choose real-time streaming (instead of Fast Start) for webcasts of live events in real time, delivery of long-form video, 24/7 Internet radio and TV channels, and other cases in which you don't want viewers to store the file on their hard disk. QuickTime Streaming Server uses the RTSP protocol.
